THE STORY OF JOANNA (new 4K restoration)
Gerard Damiano (United States, 1975) – 86 min.
“What is better: sex that grows out of love or love that grows out of pure sex?” Following the unprecedented success of Deep Throat and the critical acclaim of The Devil in Miss Jones, auteur director Gerard Damiano sought a project to push the limits of what an adult film could be in the age of “Porno Chic.” Fascinated by Pauline Réage’s The Story of O, Damiano hoped to bring the French novel to the screen, but after failing to obtain the rights, he instead chose to write his own exploration of a dominant/submissive relationship. Former ballet dancer Terri Hall makes her adult film debut as the ingénue who tests the boundaries of her own sexuality, while veteran actor Jamie Gillis plays her brooding master in this lavish tale of sadism and masochism. In honor of its 50th anniversary, this brand-new 4K restoration brings Damiano’s sumptuous, gothic tale of BDSM back to movie screens, in its fully uncut, uncensored version not seen since its original theatrical release.
