Singer-songwriter-pianists have always been known for revealing their darker and more vulnerable side for the sake of art. But few have done so with as much artistically expressed candor and brutal honesty as Fiona Apple and Tori Amos.

Both Tori Amos and Fiona Apple started their musical lives very young, with rigorous classical training, and both hit the scene in the 90s, going on to become incredibly successful and popular artists whose music touched millions. They also both used the piano in interesting and creative ways that warrant exploration by our community of pianists.

This round of Piano Starts Here will feature:

Kathy Moore
Carolyn Graye
Nelda Swiggett
Tim Kennedy

The Piano Starts Here series highlights the work of some of the most prolific and talented composers and pianists to have ever tackled the instrument. Each of the performances brings together Seattle’s finest pianists to perform the works of the artist selected for that evening on the Royal Room’s Steinway B grand piano.

Past PSH performances have highlighted the work of Sonny Clark, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Sun Ra, Annette Peacock, Bill Evans, Mary-Lou Williams, Fats Waller, Herbie Hancock, Alice Coltrane, Herbie Nichols, and countless others.

Presented by the South Hudson Music Project. Curated by Wayne Horvitz and Alex Guilbert. Hosted by Alex Guilbert.
