Muriel Spark’s novel The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is a captivating story of betrayal. It is fewer than 200 pages, almost all of its characters are women or girls, and it is often ranked as one of the 100 best novels of the 20th century.

We will read and discuss this darkly funny, one-of-a-kind novel together over four weeks. At the end, we will watch and discuss the film adaptation (which is not nearly as good as the book, although it did win Maggie Smith an Academy Award for best actress).

This class is equally suited to people who’ve never heard of the book or the author, and to people who have read it before, remember its brilliance, and want to re-read it and come to a deeper understanding of its genius.

Buy yourself a copy of the book and bring it with you to the first class. You do not need to read or prepare anything in advance.
